Self-leadership: The Key to Unlocking Career Success for Leaders

As a seasoned executive, you've undoubtedly accomplished much throughout your career. Yet, even with these achievements, it's common to encounter a sense of stagnation or uncertainty about future steps. This may manifest as feeling pigeonholed in your current position, questioning your professional accomplishments, or experiencing a general sense of fatigue. It's a challenge to figure out how to elevate your career further.

This experience is not unique. Many senior leaders I have collaborated with share similar sentiments – feeling misaligned in their current roles and yearning for more. Often, this arises from dedicating immense time to leading others and managing tasks, leaving little room for self-reflection and personal leadership.

Ask yourself: When did you last conduct a thorough self-evaluation of your career path?

Neglecting personal career development can lead to a sense of being trapped. Self-leadership involves actively steering your own career growth and acknowledging your role in shaping your career trajectory.

Essential to self-leadership are three key elements: clarity, confidence, and control.

Clarity: The cornerstone of self-leadership is clarity, which is about comprehensively understanding your values, strengths, skills, and objectives. Clarity involves not only knowing your career ambitions and devising a strategy to achieve them but also recognizing your driving forces, inspirations, and passions.

Confidence: Confidence, the second aspect of self-leadership, entails a firm belief in your capabilities. It's about trusting your judgment, embracing risks (knowing they are mitigated by your self-belief), and stepping beyond your comfort zone. It's also about acknowledging your limitations and seeking necessary support and guidance.

Control: The final aspect, control, is about taking charge of your professional and personal development. It means establishing boundaries, prioritizing your time and energy, and making decisions that align with your values and aspirations. It's about being proactive in crafting your desired career and life, instead of passively awaiting opportunities.

As an experienced professional, you have a rich reserve of knowledge and expertise. Leveraging self-leadership allows you to harness these resources to advance your career. Here are some steps to begin:

Clarity: Reflect on what drives you – your values, strengths, skills, and aspirations. What motivates and inspires you? What are your career and personal life goals?

Confidence: Embrace and develop skills aligned with your career vision. This might involve seeking mentors, training, and resources that support your professional growth.

Control: Define your boundaries and prioritize your time and energy. Focus on what matters most to you, including the people in your life.

If you're feeling uncertain or stuck, it's an opportune moment to delve into self-leadership and assume greater responsibility for your current position and future direction.

Be the leader for yourself as you are for others, and become the most influential leader in your career. You deserve it.
